The Urban Cooling Program at Melbourne Water wants to quantify the opportunities and constraints to urban cooling projects on Melbourne Water owned and managed land. Mosaic Insights with Alluvium and colleagues from the Urban Climate group at Monash University and the Green Infrastructure Research Group at the University of Melbourne were engaged to lead this project.
The project involved delivering an urban cooling literature review, significant stakeholder engagement with Melbourne Water staff and external stakeholders and complex spatial data analysis.
This project produced a spatial layer highlighting which parts of Melbourne Water land are able to host a shading urban cooling project or an irrigation project. Water demand and other variables that inform prioritisation are also included. The Pipeline of Projects has featured contributions from many different departments at Melbourne Water and externally from Living Melbourne and DELWP, which greatly increases its likely future use for decision making.
