Maribyrnong City Council experiences a large urban heat island effect due to its high levels of impervious surfaces from transport and industrial corridors, and low levels of vegetation cover. This contributes to the heat vulnerability of people living and working in the Council.
Mosaic Insights with Alluvium Consulting are engaged to develop the Maribyrnong Integrated Water Management Strategy in the context of the Council’s recent climate emergency declaration. The study includes using detailed land surface data derived from the SPOT satellite to use as inputs for modelling urban heat. Mosaic Insights then modelled how future population and urban densification scenarios, as well as climate change scenarios impact urban heat across the Council. These areas can then be prioritised for heat mitigation projects, which often require water.
