Banyule Urban Forest Strategy

Mosaic Insights supported Banyule City Council in developing a 10-year Urban Forest Strategy by combining spatial analysis and engagement with the Community Reference Group to guide tree canopy expansion and climate resilience efforts

Banyule City Council aimed to create a modern Urban Forest Strategy (UFS) aligned with its Community Vision 2041, focusing on sustainability and the importance of a healthy, diverse natural environment. With challenges like climate change, urban densification, and the natural aging of trees, there was a need for a clear strategy to protect and expand the urban forest.

Mosaic Insights was engaged to develop a 10-year Urban Forest Strategy for Banyule. We adopted a collaborative, data-driven approach, engaging the community through a Reference Group and online consultations to inform the strategy. We analysed tree canopy cover using high-resolution satellite data and integrated spatial analysis of vulnerabilities, including urban heat, social disadvantage, and biodiversity concerns.

The strategy identifies six priority directions and over 15 actionable measures to expand and safeguard Banyule’s urban forest, contributing to long-term environmental health and resilience.
