Social research informing Open Space Strategy

We supported the City of Stonnington in developing an inclusive Open Space Strategy by leading community engagement and spatial analysis to identify barriers and improve access for under-recognised groups.

The City of Stonnington aimed to develop a new Open Space Strategy, focusing on enhancing accessibility and use of public open spaces while ensuring inclusivity for under-recognised community groups. The project sought to understand barriers to open space use and incorporate diverse community perspectives in the planning process.

Mosaic Insights led social research to identify under-recognised community groups at the local, Melbourne, and Victoria levels. In collaboration with the Council, we designed a workshop and drop-in sessions to engage these groups and gather insights. To ensure broad participation, we partnered with Online Research Unit (ORU) for a representative survey of the Stonnington community, exploring values, usage, and barriers related to open space.

We also utilised anonymised GPS data to analyse spatial and temporal movement patterns within open spaces. The findings from both qualitative and quantitative methods informed the development of the Open Space Strategy, with insights shared across the Council.
